Don't feel bad, it was confusing to Bonham too. That's why John Paul Jones had to teach it to him, along with the Crunge and most of Zep's more challenging material.
Is it just me or is this one confusing rock song?
Bonham rocks on it but I just get confused

It's not just you...My natural tendency would be to put the kick where he puts the first snare hit after the 8th note intro. It seems backwards. (maybe the drum track is backwards masked ..I've heard guys dis this track because it feels awkward, but I've always thought it was clever/cool/brilliant and to me the awkwardness lends to the heaviness...it just lumbers along. I'd like to know if it's one of the tracks Page told him what to do, or if he just approached that way. He does a similar thing on "Ten Years Gone".

Awesome tune! Awesome drummer!
Quarter-note pile-driving!!
There's a lesson in that one
for everyone!!

It's not the verses I find challenging as much as trying to make that whack chorus swing.
It's a great tune. Cover bands usually avoid it simply because they can't play it.
I don't know if you guys are familiar with John Paul Jones' solo record, but it's full of odd meters, and clever grooves. All of the cool Zep rhythmic stuff came from him.
Are you talking about ZOOMA, Vdrummer? I saw that tour and it was great. As far as Black Dog goes I read that Jones helped Page find a resolution to that convoluted riff, while Bonham discovered if he played through the changes the beat would resolve itself. But I don't want to sound like a know-it-all because God knows there are drummers here who know more than I do.
And never tire of pointing it out.
Yes, I was talking about Zooma. You may be right about Jones teaching Page it and Bonham staying out of the way. It's been awhile since I read about it. I knew that cool rhythmic stuff was all Jones writing.
